X-System 8.21 / Installer 1.03-lin1-dvd Linux release X-System for Macintosh and Windows by Austin Meyer Linux port by Joshua Wise Release date: 2005-12-03 HELLO! ************************************************************************ Hello X-Users! Please read this file all the way through! It has some helpful hints! Thanks! joshua INSTALLATION: WEB ************************************************************* The X-System now has an installer. Run the installer and point it at where it should install, and it'll do the appropriate things. You may need to set the installer as executable if it is not already set that way. For optimization for your system, feel free to change the architecture in the preferences box from Generic x86 to Pentium 3 or Athlon XP. These architectures correspond to i686, pentium-3, and athlon-xp in previouos builds. For example: $ gunzip X-Plane-820-Net-Install.gz $ chmod +x X-Plane-820-Net-Install $ ./X-Plane-820-Net-Install There are presently two errata for the installer. 1) You may need to set the installed binaries as executable after installation is complete. This can be done in much the same way that the net install binary was set as executable previously. 2) Sometimes the installer segmentation faults on exit. This is a known issue, and we are looking into it. No data has been corrupted. INSTALLATION: DVD ************************************************************* The X-System now has an installer. For example: $ ./X-Plane-DVD-Install It is possible that your DVD may not have the appropriate executable bits set. If this is the case, please copy the installer to a temporary location, and set it as executable manually, as such: $ cp X-Plane-DVD-Install /tmp $ chmod +x /tmp/X-Plane-DVD-Install $ /tmp/X-Plane-DVD-Install There are presently two errata for the installer. 1) You may need to set the installed binaries as executable after installation is complete. This can be done in much the same way that the net install binary was set as executable previously. 2) Sometimes the installer segmentation faults on exit. This is a known issue, and we are looking into it. No data has been corrupted. RUNNING X-SYSTEM ************************************************************** The X-System apps are very easy to get running. cd into the directory in which X-System is stored, and then run the binary corresponding to your architecture. For example, if you are on an Athlon XP machine: $ cd x-system/ $ ./X-Plane-821-athlon-xp X-System should now run outside of its own directory. If you have problems, please report the errors to , and try again from inside the X-System directory. (therefore, the QuickTime Settings... option will provide unpredictable results.) * At present, there is no working speech output support. Festival TTS support is on the to-do list for a later version. * Sometimes when the X11 cursor is supposed to be hidden, it instead shows up as a white line. * Sometimes plugins blow up entirely, or parts of the sim fall apart. If you see this on your system, please contact X-Plane Linux support. This should be fixed in X-Plane 8.16 and higher -- if you see this, do not hesitate to contact X-Plane Linux support. * Joystick POV hats are not correctly handled yet. * Some users report that the left and right arrow keys are reversed. POWERPC-SPECIFIC NOTES ******************************************************** PowerPC support is exceptionally beta. This was developed with the generous donation of an Open Desktop Workstation from Genesi, who makes it. This release only includes the subapps for the moment, while we work out some performance issues. If it doesn't run on your PowerPC Linux machine, and your machine is a G4 or higher, please contact X-Plane Linux support, and we'll try to work it out with you. X-Plane 8.2x does not yet have PowerPC support. TROUBLESHOOTING *************************************************************** If an X-System app complains that "It seems that you have moved X-Plane out of the X-System folder!", what it is really trying to say is that it cannot find the "Resources" directory (or some critical files therein). Make sure you are running X-System from its directory, and if all else fails, reinstall it. If an X-System app suddenly dies with the message "Killed", it is possible that your system has run out of memory while running X-System. Enable swap and try again. If an X-System app suddenly dies (or refuses to start) with the message "Illegal Instruction", it is possible that you are not running the appropriate binary for your architecture, or that your architecture's binary requires functionality that your CPU does not support. Try running a binary compiled for an older processor (i.e., if you are trying i686, try i586 instead.) The libstdc++ linked in may depend on more than that listed, so if you are running the i586 binary, and you are still unable to run X-System, that may be the cause. Contact technical support as listed below if you get this message, and include the contents of /proc/cpuinfo. If an X-System app refuses to launch, saying that it cannot find libopenal.so.0, your system does not have OpenAL installed. Get an OpenAL binary for your architecture. (or compile it from source. Really, X-Plane doesn't care.) If X-Plane sounds really weird, your OpenAL might be outdated. Upgrade it. If X-Plane will not leave demo mode, please make sure that you have the DVD mounted at one of the following locations: * /mnt/cdrom * /cdrom * /media/cdrom * /mnt/dvd * /dvd * /media/dvd * /mnt/x-plane * /mnt/xplane TECHNICAL SUPPORT ************************************************************* The author of the Linux port has agreed to take technical support inquiries, provided that they are properly formed.
